My Comic Book Collection: American Splendor Special: A Step Out of the Nest #1 (August 1994)

American Splendor Special: A Step Out of the Nest #1 (August 1994)

Last night I was in a sour mood. Before going to bed, I reread this issue (My very first Harvey Pekar comic book from 1994!) and it ended up cheering me up for some reason. I guess good comic books can do that for you when you're feeling low every now and then. The older I get, the more I find Pekar to be an inspiration. I guess I can sympathize with a working class artist who wasn't too happy with his job and just wanted more out of his life. Yeah, I can relate to that.

15 Days In and I'm Not Impressed

2013 hasn't started out on the right foot. Things at work are slower than usual for this time of year so I've been working less hours and making less money. And because of all of that I had to drop out of The Odd Couple. What else? The hot water heater seems to be acting wonky. And I just found out IDW is canceling Popeye so there goes my monthly Roger Langridge fix! Boo, 2013! Clean up your act or I'm demanding a recall!

The Dunce Returns!

Dunce's Cap

Here's another Dunce drawing. This guy keeps showing up in my sketchbook for some reason. He's a supervillain with stupidity as his gimmick. His all powerful Dunce Cap makes people stupid. He also has an annoying laugh and smells like moth balls. Maybe one of these days I'll actually break down and make a superhero comic that features Dunce. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The Dollar Bill Panel of the Month: January 2013

Once upon a time, superhero teams had mascots. The Avengers had Rick Jones. The Justice League of America had Snapper Carr. And, for a very brief time, The Defenders had Dollar Bill. Okay, maybe Dollar Bill wasn't their official mascot, but that trendy, indy filmmaker stuck around the famous non-team long enough to make an impact. At least, an impact on this certain reader.

Befriending Valkyrie in The Defenders #51, Dollar Bill slowly, but surely wormed his way into the good graces of Marvel Comics' most untraditional superhero team. Brash and bombastic, Dollar Bill was annoying, self-centered, and basically a big mouth. And yet I like the bearded putz! In fact, I like him so much that I'm going to honor this nearly forgotten supporting character from the House of Ideas by featuring a panel of Dollar Bill every month in 2013! This is the first one. Enjoy!

Dollar Bill

Dollar Bill makes his first appearance in The Defenders #51 (September 1977). Written by David Kraft, penciled by Keith Giffen, and inked by Klaus Janson. The letterer was B. Patterson and Phil Rache. Marvel Comics. Dollar Bill was created by David Anthony Kraft and Keith Giffen.
